Billy Bonds
For anyone who wasn't there yesterday or missed it at half time, this is well worth a watch. Brought a lump to my throat when Billy mentioned not being able to say thank you to the fans, he looked a bit emotional and it was great for him to be able to say thank you one last time at the Boleyn Ground.

My all time favourite hammer and for me the greatest player we've ever had.

Thank you, Billy.

Spot on Buster couldn't agree more.

There will never ever be another like him.

Will be interesting to hear his views about this season as well as his career etc at the Cliff's Pavilion in September.

He was a good player for most of his career. The kind of inspirational player we could use today.

Re: Billy Bonds
I'm not old enough to remember Bonds. I was 8 when he was sacked as manager, and my first memories are during the Redknapp era.

What actually happened with Redknapp coming in? Why was Bonds sacked and Redknapp remained? It all sounds very shady. How did anyone ever warm to Redknapp?

Also, how come Bonds' career never really went anywhere? All Wikipedia tells me is he had a brief spell as Millwall manager. What's that about?

I'm not old enough to have seen Bonzo in action but how good was he and what modern day player could you compare him too?

The era I started attending regularly when Billy took over

Had a lump in my throat and could feel myself welling up when he was speaking

LEGEND

Re: Billy Bonds
He was as hard as nails, could play anywhere, was the fittest player at the club even in his 40s and should have played for England.

There is no one in the modern game like him but you could compare him to Lothar Mattheus.

boleynkid 10:53 Sun Apr 10
Re: Billy Bonds
You couldn't compare him to anyone now, his style of play would see him sent off just about every match. He tackled hard and mostly fairly but he could play a bit too don't worry about that. That bit is often overlooked as he was much much more than just a tough tackler.

A true leader of men I would say, without doubt, he is the greatest English footballer never to have played for his country.

Loved it when he'd to roll down his socks mid match, thats when you knew he meant business.

Saw this myself buster and also felt the same as you.All I've ever wanted from a West Ham team is a fighting chance and every time Bonzo pulled on that shirt of ours you felt that was going to be the case.

Re: Billy Bonds
Bonds, Lampard and Paddon looked like Vikings in the mid 70s.

All 3 had wonderful facial hair, socks round their ankles chucking themselves around a muddy pitch.

The best days.

Re: Billy Bonds
Was a great moment.
Lots of others incl Parkes, A Taylor, Martin etc were introduced on the pitch but the massive reaction was for Billy Bonds.
Was great that he got to say his piece as you could tell how much it meant to him.
Bravo!

Which player was he like?
Imagine Patrick Vieira with 2 hearts and 3 extra BOLLOCKS.

great clip of my 2 greatest living hammers.

Had the pleasure of seeing them regularly at their peak.

Re: Billy Bonds
A great day and half time was special. The reaction Bonds got was special and shows the respect fans have for him - quite a number of the gooners even clapped.

I remember meeting once in a car park in Chislehurst - he made a joke about his daughters parking and hoped my car was alright... I was so starstruck I couldn't even talk football!

Hopefully the day will come when we are allowed to name more than 2 'stands' at OS and the East should then be rightly names the Billy Bonds Stand - a true great and his record number of appearances will never be beaten.

You could tell how much it meant to him to thank everyone.
Legend. (And the hipsters think this beard thing is all new nowadays!)

Re: Billy Bonds
They never show my favourite Bonds moment when he and Peter Withe came to blows after a tackle and the ref (I think it was a live Thomas?) went steaming over and they spotted this and quickly got to their feet and did the tango dance. :-)

I don't think the ref even booked them it was that funny.

A proper hard man but not dirty.

If you combined the heart and guts of James Collins, the engine of Antonio and the strength of Kouyate you might come close to a player like hm.
